The USS Intrepid is an Essex-class aircraft carrier that served the US Navy from 1943 to 1974 — through World War II (including direct kamikaze attacks at Okinawa and Leyte Gulf), the Vietnam War, the Cuban Missile Quarantine, and as the recovery ship for two Mercury and Gemini space capsule splashdowns. Decommissioned in 1974, the ship was saved from scrapping by NYC real-estate developer Zachary Fisher and moored at Pier 86 on the Hudson River as a museum in 1982.
Today the carrier is the museum's main exhibit — visitors walk through three flight decks (the upper flight deck with restored aircraft, the hangar bay with rotating exhibitions, and the lower decks with crew quarters, the bridge, and the bow compartment). The aircraft collection includes an F-14 Tomcat, an A-12 Blackbird reconnaissance plane, multiple Navy fighters, and helicopters.
Three additional major exhibits anchor the complex: the British Airways Concorde (one of seven surviving supersonic passenger jets, accessible interior); the space shuttle Enterprise (the first orbiter built, used for atmospheric drop tests before space-flight orbiters were constructed, never flew in space); and the USS Growler, a Cold War-era submarine designed to launch nuclear cruise missiles — visitors can walk through the cramped interior.
The Intrepid Hall (the dockside exhibition building) hosts rotating exhibitions and educational programs. Allow 4-5 hours; many families spend a full day.
What to Expect
Format
Self-paced across the carrier ship, Concorde, space shuttle pavilion, and submarine. Free maps. Guided tours included with admission.
Best Time
Weekday mornings. Summer afternoons get hot on the open flight deck — bring sunscreen.
Duration
Half-day minimum. Families with engaged kids spend a full day.
Tips
The submarine has limited capacity at any moment — go there first if it interests you. The flight simulator (separate ticket) is fun for kids but skippable if you're time-constrained. Pier 86 has good Hudson River views from the upper flight deck.
